Generally, an F2.8 lens will not be sharpest at F2.8 and this applies to the 24-70 v2. I think sharpness is relative to one's expectations. For example: This professional review of the 24-70 v2 found the lens to be sharper at F4 and F5.6 than F2.8. A smidge softer at F2.8 may be expected.

The only lens I own for my R5 is the 24-70 f2.8 in RF mount. It was a tough choice between it and the 28-70 f2. If you aren't traveling much the f2 seems amazing, just stupid heavy. Apparently the stablilzation is the same between the two, even though the f2.8 has IS and the f2 does not.
