Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM: Performance. Wide open at 24mm, sharpness in the centre is already very good and improves steadily as the lens is stopped down as far as f/5.6 where its performance in
It does not come close to the Tamron 24-70 VC and Canon L II until f/5.6 even in this mid-image circle comparison. The Tamron, on the other hand, essentially runs with the 24-70 L II from the f/2.8 start. In the mid focal lengths at f/2.8, the Canon 24-70 L II has the image quality edge over the Tamron 24-70 VC, but the differences are not
It came with the 24-105 lens but not being satisfied with the max f stop size I purchased the 70-200 f2.8 and while it is a great lens for this, I often find I am shooting at the lower end of the zoom range. I have been considering the 50 f1.2 or the 24-70 f2.8 to get a little wider shot and still have a nice wide apeture.
Generally, an F2.8 lens will not be sharpest at F2.8 and this applies to the 24-70 v2. I think sharpness is relative to one's expectations. For example: This professional review of the 24-70 v2 found the lens to be sharper at F4 and F5.6 than F2.8. A smidge softer at F2.8 may be expected.

Sigma is supposedly preparing an update in that focal range, but the one that exists doesn't come within a mile of the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L II. Albert Silver's gear list: Nikon D750 Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Sigma 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM Tamron SP 35mm F1.8 Di VC USD +1 more.
The only lens I own for my R5 is the 24-70 f2.8 in RF mount. It was a tough choice between it and the 28-70 f2. If you aren't traveling much the f2 seems amazing, just stupid heavy. Apparently the stablilzation is the same between the two, even though the f2.8 has IS and the f2 does not. o1jW4.
