Ive had the same problem. "update.zip" was not shown on the external SD Card form the System Recovery Menu. My solution: I've copied the the internal stroage /root/download/ and to the external SD Card /root/. First reboot into the "recovery menu" I've selected "update from internal storage" and selected the update.zip file.
