Everything looks so soft and devoid of detail. As an example, look at Faramir's face when he's conversing with Pippin towards the end of the first disc of the Extended Edition of the Return of the King (right before Pippin swears fealty to Denethor). His face is so without detail and soft. You can't see the pores on his face or anything like that.
Actually that's incorrect. There is an excellent fan edit of the Lord of the Rings extended editions called the purist edition. It cuts out parts of the movies that are not in line with the books. It's quite good. And for true fans of the books is better than the original cuts off the movies.
Lotr theatrical cuts are the director’s original vision and have perfect pacing vs the bloated extendeds. Hobbit extended because the theatrical cuts were not the directors original vision but studio mandated/not enough time in the editing room to perfect. So hobbit extended basically fix the broken theatrical versions and are essential.
Lord of the Rings 4K vs HDX. I own the HDX release of Lord of the Rings Extended Edition. It is essentially the bluray edition before the remaster color corrections from 2020. Releasing in December 2001, The Fellowship of the Ring would change the landscape of cinema forever. Related: Everything Added In Lord Of The Rings' Extended Editions
The Hobbit films are not awful movies but they are not masterpieces like the LOTR trilogy is. The movies are very enjoyable but there is just too much CGI, chaotic storytelling, and multiple plotlines that aren't really interesting. The movies were rushed and the story of the Hobbit itself is inferior compared to Lord of the Rings.
I wish the original film prints of the extended edition of the lord of the rings trilogy were out there and somebody could scan them in 4k and the cgi effects as well. so we’d get a release without digital tinkering and with a proper Dolby vision hdr grade. 😦.
